What is a Domain Transfer?
A domain transfer is a process of changing the designated registrar to which a domain name is assigned, to another registrar. This new registrar will take over hosting, maintenance, and provide support to the domain and its registrant. As an industry-standard, Domain names may be transferred only if they have been registered with the previous registrar for 60 days or more.
Requirements for Domain migration
For a successful domain transfer to a new registrar, the registrant must provide, or ensure the following:
- The domain EPP key code or transfer secret for the domains for which you want to transfer.
- Make sure the domain name to be transferred is not in ‘locked’ status.
- Make sure you have access to the administrative email associated with the domain name.
- Make sure the domain name expiration is more than 5 days from the day of your request.
- The domain name must have been registered for the first time more than 60 days ago.
- Make sure the domain name has one of the following extensions: .com; .net; .org; .biz; .info.
STEPS
1. If the domain name is in “locked” status, ask your registrar to unlock your domain for a transfer and make sure you have access to the email address for the administrative contact. 2. Ask your current registrar for your EPP Key or domain transfer secret for your domain to be transferred.
3. Make sure you have access to the email address that is listed as the administrative contact for the domain ( remember, the transfer request will be sent to this email address)
4. Proceed to the website of your new choice of the domain registrar and make your order.
5. A transfer request will be sent to the administrative contact for approval. Follow the instructions in the mail to accept the transfer.
6. The domain will be transferred successfully between 3-5 days if the EPP key is correct.
